Vanquish Review

Vanquish - Platinum Games
Format -Xbox 360, Playstation 3

Set in the 'near' future you play as the DARPA Agent Sam Gideon and, as with most sci-fi games, technology has become far superior to that of modern day.
The game takes place on a living space-station. Imagine Halo's idea but on a much smaller scale and you get the picture. With this type of technology there is always someone who wants what you have, or wants to destroy it. Cue the Russians!!!

Using solar energy stored within the station, the Russians go medieval on San Francisco, annihilating the city. Next, they threaten to destroy New York City unless the President responds to their demands. Enter Sam and his suit more useful than a utility belt.
With Sam comes his Augmented Reaction Suit (ARS), which has its own rocket booster allowing you to slide across the floor at blistering speeds. Why the floor and not jetting through the sky? Who knows? With a winning combination from Bayonetta and the master mind behind Devil May Cry and Dante, I'm not going to argue.

The game play for Vanquish is just pure brilliance. It's fast paced and in your face with difficulty settings to please every gamer, including God Hard. This is not to be toyed with as it's as tough as Chuck Norris. Battles contain both shooting and melee based combat. Mixed with the speed boosting, this makes for a style of combat I haven't seen in games since... Well, I don't think there is a game. A DMC and Gears mix is probably as close as you can get, but even that doesn't really do it justice. It's in a league of its own.

Vanquish is a massive breath of fresh air, it's the first game in a couple of years I haven't been able to put down due to pure enjoyment. Although it can be frantic at times and can drive you a little crazy when you've died multiple times, it's charm will keep you playing.

The only snag with the game is its length. For casual difficulty you're looking at around 5 to 7 hours of game play. Whilst this is steep for a full priced game, unlike The Force Unleashed 2 which leaves you feeling deeply disappointed, Vanquish is the exact opposite. You want more. This will have you playing the game at least for a second play through. Platinum have a winning combination for action adventure games which Vanquish has proven once again. Hopefully next time around they might add a few more features.

If you like any of the following titles you will definitely love this game:

- Bayonetta
- Devil May Cry
- Dantes Inferno
